Uman: from a Cossack regiment to Sofiyivka Park

The first written mention of the "town of Human" dates from August 1616. In 1609 the surrounding lands had been granted by royal privilege to Walenty Aleksander Kalinowski, who founded a castle here. In 1648 Uman became the centre of the Uman Regiment, and in the winter of 1655–1656 Cossacks led by Ivan Bohun repelled an offensive by Crown Hetman Stanis?aw Potocki. Uman received Magdeburg rights in 1760; in 1796 Stanis?aw Szcz?sny Potocki laid out Sofiyivka Park for his wife Sofia, and in 1859 the Main School of Horticulture moved here from Odesa.

Notable people of Uman

Uman is the birthplace of Mykhailo Khanenko (1620–1680), hetman of Right-bank Ukraine in 1669–1674, writer and theatre critic Yurii Smolych (1900–1976) and Grammy-winning musician and composer Ruslan Sirota (born 1980). Ivan Kotliarevskyi did military service here in 1805. The city honours its native Andrii Kyzylo (1993–2017), Hero of Ukraine, who fell in the battles for Avdiivka; a street bears his name.

Uman today

Uman lies on the Dnieper Upland on both banks of the Umanka River. Its highlight is Sofiyivka National Dendrological Park, home to the roughly 300-year-old "Gonta's Lime" and "Gonta's Oak". Other sights include the Church of the Assumption (completed 1826), now an art gallery, the Uman Local History Museum (founded 1917), the monument to Zalizniak and Gonta and a 1:100 replica of the Eiffel Tower. The city is home to the National University of Horticulture, and every year on the Jewish New Year Hasidic pilgrims from many countries visit the grave of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov.
