Novovolynsk: a brief history

Novovolynsk is a young mining town built on the lands of the old villages of Dorohynychi, Nyzkynychi, Budiatychi, Rusovychi and Byskupychi Mali; in the first half of the 15th century Prince ?vitrigaila granted Nyzkynychi to his marshal O. Kysil. In 1912 geologist Mykhailo Tetiaiev suggested there was coal here; the first mine was laid near Dorohynychi in July 1950, and Mine No. 1 produced its first coal on 23 June 1954. The miners' settlement was named Novovolynsk on 10 April 1951 and became a town in April 1957.

People connected with Novovolynsk

The town is linked with Serhii Baidovskyi, a Euromaidan activist and Hero of the Heavenly Hundred killed on Instytutska Street in Kyiv on 20 February 2014, as well as Ukraine international footballer Artem Fedetskyi and poet, composer and conductor Oleksandr Kalishchuk. Fallen defenders Volodymyr Pushkaruk (1972–2014) and Oleh Pushkaruk (1969–2018), holders of the Order for Courage, are honorary citizens of Novovolynsk.

Novovolynsk today

The town lies in south-western Volyn, about 15 km from the Polish border. Its landmarks include the Dormition Church of the Nyzkynychi Monastery, an 18th-century church on Panasivska Street moved here from Kryliv in 1911–1912, and the Holy Spirit Cathedral. Of its 11 mines, Buzhanska is still working. We deliver bouquets to any neighbourhood of Novovolynsk.
