Mukachevo: from its first mention to today
Mukachevo's story begins with a legend in the Gesta Hungarorum: in 896 the chieftain ?lmos crossed the Carpathians, took the settlement and celebrated victory here for 40 days. On 22 May 1376 Queen Elizabeth issued a charter that first called Mukachevo a town and granted it a seal with St Martin, the first such status in Transcarpathia. In 1396–1414 the town belonged to Prince Fedir Koriatovych, who rebuilt the castle and made Mukachevo the centre of a principality of about 300 villages. In 1445 John Hunyadi granted Magdeburg rights, and in 1446 the first guild, of tailors, was founded. In 1686–1688 Ilona Zr?nyi held the castle for two years against Antonio Caraffa's Austrian troops.
Famous people of Mukachevo
The painter Mih?ly Munk?csy (1844–1900), a founder of Hungarian realist painting, was born here, as was actor and Kossuth Prize winner Tivadar Uray (1895–1962). The polemical writer Mykhailo Andrella (1637–1710) came from Rosvyhovo, now part of the town, and the Transcarpathian writer and ethnographer Oleksandr Mytrak (1837–1913) is buried here. Among Mukachevo's notable people is soldier Artur Pashkuliak (1979–2023), Hero of Ukraine (posthumously).
