A short history of Kalush
Kalush is first mentioned in a copy of a charter issued by Prince Svidrigaila in Halych in 1400, and again in the Halych court books on 27 May 1437. In 1549 King Sigismund II Augustus had Miko?aj Sieniawski grant it town rights under Magdeburg law, with a coat of arms showing three loaves of salt, a nod to its salt-making past. Jakub Sobieski, father of King John III, was the local starost in the early 17th century. In autumn 1648 the townspeople set up Ukrainian self-government under burgomaster Hryts Volykovych, and on 16 October 1672 they joined Sobieski's army in defeating a Tatar force and freeing over a thousand captive children.
