Drohobych, a town of salt and the Renaissance

Drohobych grew up in Kyivan Rus times around brine springs; 1091 is its official founding date, and its 925th anniversary was marked nationally in 2016. In 1460 it received Magdeburg rights, confirmed in 1506 by King Alexander Jagiellon. By 1565 it had 45 saltworks, and in the mid-19th century it became Europe's largest oil centre. On 1 March 2024 an Alley of Memory for fallen defenders of Ukraine opened in Stepan Bandera Park.

People of Drohobych

Renaissance scholar Yurii Drohobych (c. 1450–1494), the first Ukrainian author of a printed book, was born here. Ivan Franko (1856–1916) studied in the town, and writer and artist Bruno Schulz (1892–1942) spent his whole life here; artist Ephraim Moses Lilien (1874–1925) and singer Khrystyna Soloviy are also natives.

Drohobych today

The town stands on the Tysmenytsia River at the edge of the Carpathian foothills. Its wooden churches of St George and of the Holy Cross (1613), the Gothic Church of St Bartholomew, the town hall, the Choral Synagogue and the saltworks complex are the main sights; the salt works is Ukraine's oldest operating enterprise.
