10 Tips for Choosing the Perfect Wedding Flowers

See photos in full size
Given the huge scope of planning a dream wedding, the flowers can seem like a mere afterthought. What many brides do not realize is that the flowers have a vital role to play, and choosing the wrong ones will impact everything from the look of the reception hall to the reactions of their guests. Here are 10 tips for choosing the perfect wedding flowers.

. Be flexible about flower types. Some flowers are more expensive than others, and replacing those costly blooms with less expensive alternatives can reduce your budget without harming the beauty of your big day.

. Consider alternate colors. Even if you have your heart set on a specific color theme, leave yourself open to other ideas. Contrasting colors and bright hues can look great, even if the rest of your wedding uses pastel hues and softer shades.

Work with the photographer as well as the florist. You will be looking at your live wedding flowers for a day, but you will be enjoying your wedding photos for a lifetime. Work with your photographer to see how the flowers you have chosen will look on film (or digital).

. Consider the overall look of the reception hall, not only the floral centerpieces and buffet sprays. Look at the decorations as a whole, and make sure your flowers compliment the look you have worked so hard to create.

. Set a budget, and stick to it. It is easy to go overboard, and over budget, when choosing wedding flowers. Setting a firm budget ahead of time will make that kind of overspending less likely.

. Incorporate your ceremonial flowers into the reception displays. There is no reason your ceremonial wedding flowers cannot do double-duty as reception hall displays. Tell your florist you plan to reuse flowers from the church, then choose your ceremonial displays accordingly.

. Choose elegant simplicity for the bridesmaids' bouquets. You want your own wedding bouquet to be the center of attention, so take a less is more attitude when choosing flowers for the bridesmaids.

. Shop by stem count. There is nothing worse than the disappointment brides feel when they were expecting a lush bouquet but received a skimpy one instead. You can avoid that kind of disappointment by basing your vendor quotes on stem count.

. Consider renting your floral accessories. From votive candleholders and small glass table vases to the large containers for the buffet displays and centerpieces, you can rent all those items and keep the cost down.

. Create a display of seasonal flowers for the perfect wedding theme. A seasonal wedding is always fun, and incorporating seasonal blooms will make it that much better. Seasonal flowers are always fresh, always available and often lower priced than their out-of-season counterparts.
